Oakley was founded in 1975 by avid motocross fan Jim Jannard who named the brand after his pet dog ‘Oakley Anne’. He started out by producing motorcycle grips constructed from ‘Unobtanium’, a unique rubber material that he had created which offered a far better grip in wet conditions than any others around at the time. It wasn’t until 1984 that Oakley made their move into the eyewear market, which they would go on to completely revolutionise with unique ground-breaking designs. The ‘Jacket’ family of sunglasses by Oakley, starting with the ‘Eye Jacket’ in 1994, aimed at producing frames that fit the face like clothing fits the body. The popularity of this range of sunglasses propelled the brand forward through the 1990s and solidified their position as a leader of innovation.
In 1998, Oakley decided to reverse engineer one of their most unique and iconic frames at the time: X-Metal Mars, incorporating design elements directly from this pair into an O-matter frame. The result is the ‘Moon’ sunglasses, with perfectly rounded Plutonite lenses displaying Oakley’s High-Definition Optics technology, jet intake icons on the arms and raised ‘bolts’ on the frame.
