Junya Watanabe MAN x Karrimor Reversible Backpack Jacket
Junya Watanabe MAN x Karrimor Reversible Backpack Jacket
Junya Watanabe began his career in 1984 as a pattern cutter and protégé of Rei Kawakubo at Comme des Garçons. He began working under his own name for a separate Comme des Garçons line in the early 90s and developed a reputation for his technical designs and the way he reworked fabrics in the early 2000s. He has worked with several outdoor brands such as The North Face, Karrimor and Mystery Ranch on sets of apparel that all build upon the concept of re-configuring backpacks and fusing them with jackets.
This particular piece from 2022 features a nylon fabric with a checked pattern as the base with a deconstructed Karrimor backpack infused over the fabric. On the front, the backpack panels have been strategically placed to act as pockets for the hands with overlayed mesh pockets. The back features the bulk of the backpack which has been reworked and spread across the back panel with 2 zipped pockets and a large button-secured dump pocket. When reversed, the jacket takes a similar form to a bomber jacket with zipped hand pockets and compartments on the arm, with the backpack offering interior storage options and the stitch work becoming exposed on the outer layer. A fantastic piece that truly blends function and fashion and is a great example of why Junya Watanabe is regarded as one of the best to do it.
Great condition with no flaws!
