Jamiroquai x Levi’s SilverTab Technical Cargo Jacket - 1996
Jamiroquai are a British acid jazz/electronic funk band with a wide range of influences from different cultures and styles of music, including house and 70s soul/funk. The name is a blend of the word ‘Jam’ (jam session) and the Native American tribe, the Iroquois. The band enjoyed great success from their first releases in 1992, right through the 90s and early 2000s, with their futuristic sound gaining a lot of popularity in the mid 1990s with their second and third albums. Much of this success can be attributed to front man and vocalist, Jay Kay, who is the bands founder and only consistent member. Aside from the music, Jay Kay is also known to be a huge car enthusiast and his eccentric personality and style have turned him into an icon’. His style encapsulates what was popular in the UK at the time: colourful shells/track jackets and fleeces and low sneakers (mainly Adidas), with his own eye-catching twist of the largest exotic headwear. He’s become an inspiration for many designers recently, with Virgil Abloh drawing from Jay Kay’s personal style for some of his 2019 Louis Vuitton collections. Junya Watanabe has collaborated with Jay Kay, basing most of his F/W2022 collection on Jamiroquai and even remixing the famous ‘Virtual Insanity’ music video as the showcase for the collection.
This particular piece is part of a 1996 collaboration with the Levi’s SilverTab line for the release of the band’s third album ‘Travelling Without Moving’. It’s likely that Jay Kay would have had a hand in the design and styling of this collection. The jacket features a total of 15 storage options: 6 large cargo pockets on the front, with 2 smaller ones on the outside of the bottom pockets and 1 behind the chest logo, 1 pocket near the cuff of each arm, 3 interior pockets and finally 1 large back pocket. Jamiroquai branding features on the chest, zip flap and interior pocket. There is also shiny silver panelling on the exterior and inner lining, zips at the hem and pits for ventilation, adjustable cuffs and elasticated hem and waist. A fantastic technical piece from one of my favourite artists of all time.
