1996 Issey Miyake Parachute Cargo Bomber
Throughout the most impressive 70-year career in fashion, Issey Miyake established himself as a designer who could incorporate influences from every aspect of life into his designs, captivating audiences around the world with every show and building important foundations and platforms for the next generation of young designers to showcase their talents. Everything from fine art to everyday workwear and military styles can be seen in every collection offered by the Japanese designer, none more so than the A/W 1996 collection which showcased a variety of influences emphasised by Miyake’s unique colour palette. However, one piece in particular from this season was undoubtedly the most striking, grasping the attention of enthusiasts worldwide since release and becoming one of their most sought-after pieces.
The piece labelled the ‘parachute cargo bomber’ was Miyake’s own rendition of a typical western MA-1 military bomber jacket with ballistic nylon detailing that gives the effect of a parchute cargo vest over the top. There are 7 compartments on the front, with a pocket on the arm and a large compartment on the back, highlighted by ballistic nylon detailing. There are also 2 extra pockets on the nylon interior lining and a large waterproof hood concealed within the collar.
This was the jacket of choice for world famous Actor Robin Williams when he stepped out for the premiere of ‘Flubber’ in 1997, instantly increasing the desirability of the jacket. It has since been showcased by a few celebrities with a clear interest in archive fashion, such as Playboi Carti in his ‘Magnolia’ music video and more recently A$AP Rocky in the music video for ‘Riot’.
In good overall condition with signs of wear and age mainly to the hardwear of the jacket (fading on buttons and zips) but all in perfect working order. Ballistic nylon construction not as stiff which allows for a more relaxed fit, particularly at the hem.
